Winterhawks Weekly: First-Place Hawks Facing Four-Game Week
February 12, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Winterhawks hit the ice for just one game last week but made the most of it, picking up a sixth win over Seattle, 4-1, in seven meetings this season. Gabe Klassen and James Stefan each scored twice in the win, and the first-place Hawks hit a busy week with victories in four straight contests.
On Tuesday, Portland will take on the Everett Silvertips, who have the same amount of points as the Winterhawks but have played five more games. Then, it's a home-and-home with the Vancouver Giants, starting Friday at the Langley Events Centre before shifting to the VMC for Mascot Night on Saturday. Wrapping things up, another home-ice duel with the 'Tips awaits on Sunday as Portland and Everett conclude their season series.
Hot Hawks:
Forward Gabe Klassen led the Winterhawks with three points (2G, 1A) in Saturday's win and has posted multiple points in each of the last four games. The Hawks' captain leads all U.S. Division skaters and ranks tied for third in league scoring with 86 points on the year.
Forward Kyle Chyzowski chipped in two assists on Saturday to push his point streak to four games. The Surrey, B.C. native has one goal and four helpers in that span and ranks 10th in team scoring with 35 points this season.
Forward James Stefan scored twice against Seattle and has recorded 11 points on his current four-game streak. The 20-year-old sniper has goals in three of his last four games and leads the Hawks with 36 tallies on the year.
Forward Nate Danielson set up Klassen's opening strike on Saturday for his sixth point in four games this month. The Detroit Red Wings' first-rounder has found the scoresheet in nine out of 11 games since joining the Winterhawks last month.
Forward Josh Zakreski tallied an assist for the third straight game in the win over the T-Birds, marking his third point streak of three or more games this season. The 2024 NHL Draft prospect has points in five of his last six outings and is up to 36 on the year.
Defenseman Luca Cagnoni also posted two assists in Saturday's win to extend his own point streak to four outings. Like Chyzowski, Cagnoni has posted a 1G, 4A line in February and leads all WHL defensemen with 64 points in 48 games this year.
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 4 vs. Seattle 1 (Saturday):
Gabe Klassen and James Stefan each scored twice, Jan Špunar made 17 saves on 18 shots and the Winterhawks knocked off their rival Seattle Thunderbirds once again, 4-1, at the VMC on Saturday night.
The Week Ahead:
