
Winterhawks Fall 4-3 in Victoria Wednesday

The Portland Winterhawks (48-18-3-1) outshot Victoria 13-2 in the third period Wednesday, but dropped a 4-3 road decision against the Royals (23-41-3-4).
Victoria opened the scoring 4:45 into the game on a power play goal by Austin Carroll, but midway through the period the Hawks got goals 19 seconds apart from Ty Rattie and Taylor Leier to take a 2-1 lead that would stand into the second period. Rattie's goal was his 55th of the season.
The Royals evened the game at the 7:23 mark of the second period on a goal by Jamie Crooks, then took a 3-2 lead on a goal from Zane Jones at the 13:23 mark, a score that would last through the period.
Oliver Gabriel tied the game for Portland when he scored 2:36 into the third, evening the score at 3-3. Victoria regained an advantage when Steven Hodges scored to make it 4-3 at the 13:14 mark of the third. The Hawks applied pressure throughout the period, hitting several posts and outshooting Victoria 13-2 in the frame. However, the Royals hung on and finished with the 4-3 victory.
Keith Hamilton picked up the win in net for Victoria, stopping 32 of 35 Portland shots. Mac Carruth made 15 saves on 19 Portland shots.
Portland was 0-2 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks take on the Royals again on Friday, then return home for the regular season finale on Sunday against Seattle at 5 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Coliseum
