Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (21-4-0-1) sent their fans into Thanksgiving on a happy note Wednesday with a 4-2 win over the Everett Silvertips (11-9-1-3) at the Rose Garden in front of 7.444 fans.

Oliver Gabriel had two of Portland's goals, and the Winterhawks remain the top team in the WHL with 43 points.

The Silvertips opened the scoring when Josh Birkholz capitalized on an odd-man rush 1:51 into the game with his seventh goal of the game to make it 1-0. The Winterhawks evened the game at the 15:33 mark of the period when Gabriel walked out from the right faceoff circle and fired a shot past Everett netminder Kent Simpson to make it 1-1, a score that would remain through the end of the period.

The Winterhawks made it 2-1 at the 13:17 mark of the second period on a terrific individual effort by Gabriel while shorthanded. Gabriel corralled a bouncing puck in the neutral zone, carried the puck into Everett's zone, fought off a Silvertips defenseman and fired it past Simpson to give Portland the lead. The Winterhawks then made it 3-1 with a minute left in the period when Sven Bartschi fed a backdoor pass to Brendan Leipsic, who'd snuck in behind the defense, gathered the pass and found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Portland outshot Everett 18-4 in the period.

The Silvertips cut the deficit to one 4:05 into the third period on a goal by Tyler Maxwell to make it 3-2. With under a minute to play the Silvertips pulled Simpson for an extra attacker, and the Winterhawks sealed the win with an empty net goal by Ryan Johansen with 32.8 seconds left.

The Winterhawks head out for a two-game road trip, playing in Chillwack Friday and in Tri-Cities Saturday, before returning home Sunday to host the Medicine Hat Tigers.
