Gabriel, Winterhawks Down Everett

Portland, OR - The Portland Winterhawks led by a three point night from Oliver Gabriel (2G, 1A) defeated the Everett Silvertips Wednesday night 4-2. Tyler Maxwell and Josh Birkholz scored for Everett. Kent Simpson made 34 saves for the 'Tips.

Birkholz scored his seventh goal of the season giving Everett their first lead of the game at 1:51. Everett caused a Winterhawks turnover leading to a 3 on 1 rush into the Portland zone. Parker Stanfield set up a one-timer pass to Birkholz beating Portland goalie Mac Carruth for a 1-0 Everett lead. The Winterhawks tied the game after Oliver Gabriel scored his fifth of the year at 15:33. Gabriel walked toaward the net from the right circle before beating Simpson with a well placed shot high glove side.

Gabriel scored his second goal of the night at 13:17 to give Portland their first lead of the game. Scoring shorthanded, Gabriel made a great move around an Everett defenseman before firing a hard wrist shot past Simpson blocker side. The Winterhawks took a two goal lead when Brendan Leipsic scored at 19:00. Sven Bartschi made a great cross zone pass to Leipsic backdoor on the rush. Leipsic was able to redirect the puck past Simpson to give Portland a 3-1 lead at the end of the second period.

Maxwell scored his team leading 18th goal at 4:05 of the third period. A great passing play started with Ryan Murray at the point who found Kellan Tochkin at the right post. Tochkin made a great tape to tape pass to Maxwell on the left post to make the score 3-2. Ryan Johansen scored an empty net goal to conclude a 4-2 victory for the Portland Winterhawks.

This brings the 'Tips record to 11-9-1-3 with 26 points in 24 games played. Everett comes back to Comcast Arena this Friday for a 7:35 pm start against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
