Winston-Salem Dash News Release

LYNCHBURG, Va. (August 11, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash's rally fell short despite scoring the final four runs of a 5-4 defeat to the Lynchburg Hillcats Sunday night at Lynchburg City Stadium in the opener of a three-game series.

Lynchburg (19-26, 54-59) opened the scoring in the contest with a run in the very first inning against Dash starter Bryan Blough (9-10). Levi Hyams singled and stole second before coming home when David Rohm singled to center with two down.

The Hillcats added four more in the fourth frame. With the bases loaded, Anthony Nunez picked up an RBI with a groundout. Another Hillcat scored when Blough uncorked a wild pitch before a Chris Curley error pushed across two unearned runs to give Lynchburg a 5-0 lead.

The Dash (22-26, 60-58) got on the board against Hillcats starter Williams Perez (5-1) in the sixth. Micah Johnson led off with a single before moving to second by stealing his minor league-leading 76th base of the year. Joey DeMichele followed with a single of his own to break the shutout.

Winston-Salem drew a run closer in the seventh. Rangel Ravelo started the frame with a double and came around a few batters later on a Grant Buckner groundout.

Perez was pulled after the seventh, turning things to the Lynchburg bullpen. The Dash took advantage, closing the gap even more with back-to-back RBI singles from Ravelo and Jeremy Farrell. Winston loaded the bases with two down but left them loaded to leave the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

Johnson started the ninth with a double against Lynchburg closer Nate Hyatt, putting the tying run in scoring position for DeMichele. DeMichele put down a bunt, but Hyatt threw out Johnson at third. Curley then grounded into a double play to end the contest and earn Hyatt his 11th save of 2013.

Blough lasted seven frames in the contest, allowing five runs with only three earned, while striking out seven. The righty retired the final 10 Lynchburg hitters he faced, keeping his team in the contest. He now leads High-A baseball with 144.2 innings pitched.

Game two of this series comes up Monday night at Lynchburg City Stadium. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Myles Jaye (7-6, 4.53 ERA) to the mound, while the Hillcats will counter with lefty Ryan Hinson (2-2, 2.25 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, and the Pregame Dash begins at 6:50 on wsdash.com/broadcast.

The Dash's next homestand begins Wednesday when they welcome the Salem Red Sox to BB&T Ballpark. This homestand features the Dash's final All-You-Can-Eat Night on Thursday and fireworks after the game on Friday. For tickets, call (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
