Nineteen-year-old goaltender Daniel Hauser made 27 saves as the Winnipeg ICE opened the WHL Championship Series presented by Nutrien with a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds Friday night at Canada Life Centre.
Connor McClennon, Evan Friesen and Carson Latimer scored for the ICE who had a 2-0 lead after the opening period and 3-0 advantage through 40 minutes.
Reid Schaefer and Kevin Korchinski replied for the Thunderbirds, who outshot the ICE 29-28. Schaefer, along with ICE Captain Carson Lambos, led all players in the game with six shots on goal.
Thomas Milic suffered the loss.
Winnipeg went 1/4 on the powerplay while Seattle was 0/2
Game Two is tomorrow (Saturday) night at 6pm inside Canada Life Centre.
