February 27, 2010 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
BUFFALO, NY - The Philadelphia Wings (2-6) defeated the Buffalo Bandits 15-11 to end the team's five game winless streak. The Wings sustained a balanced offensive attack throughout the full four quarters, something that has been a problem thus far this season. Philadelphia had five players with five points or more including newly signed forward David Mitchell, who had three goals and two assists in his 2010 debut. Philadelphia will travel to Calgary to face the Roughnecks on Saturday, March 6, beginning at 9:30 p.m. The Wings will then play in Orlando on Friday, March 12 before returning home to Wachovia Center on Saturday, March 13 at 7 p.m. to face the Minnesota Swarm.
High energy transition play and special teams defined the first half that saw a combined 55 shots between the two teams. Just as they had in their previous two contests, Philadelphia jumped out to an early lead. Drew Westervelt opened the scoring on the powerplay for the Wings just under a minute and half into the contest. Philadelphia scored four first quarter goals, including Mitchell's first on the night. The Wings were able to stretch their first half lead to four at 6-2, but the Bandits stormed back behind the efforts of John Tavares to pull within one at halftime with the score 7-6 in favor of the Wings.
The teams traded early goals in the second half, but Buffalo was unable to take the lead from Philadelphia. The Wings continued their up tempo offensive attack and cashed in on their special teams opportunities, something the team has struggled with thus far in 2010. Philadelphia was three for three on power play opportunities in the second half and five for seven overall in the game. Wings Assistant Captain Geoff Snider was named the game MVP. He put up an impressive five points (1G, 4A), 16 loose balls, and won 26 of 29 face-offs taken in the contest.
