Philadelphia Wings News Release

PHILADELPHIA - The Wings failed to score in the final quarter as they fell to the Toronto Rock, 13-9, Saturday at the First Union Center in front of 13,585 fans. The Rock scored four goals in the final quarter as they won their fourth straight game. Toronto scored six of its goals on the power play. Tom Ryan and Tom Marechek led the Wings with two goals each and Keith Cromwell added three assists.

"I'm concerned over the fact that we had bad penalties," said Wings' coach Adam Mueller. "We took horrible penalties. That's not what you want to do. Anytime you play a team like this, you can't do that. We were a man down almost the whole final quarter. We were shorthanded and couldn't get our offense going. We played great except the penalties."

The Wings started the scoring in the first quarter with a goal by Paul Cantabene, but the rest of the period belonged to Toronto. The Rock netted two power-play goals after the Wings' Andrew Guindon got a double-minor penalty. Colin Doyle and Steve Toll assisted on the goals by Blaine Manning and Aaron Wilson. Former Wing forward Kevin Finneran netted his first goal against his old team to round out the scoring in the quarter.

The two teams traded goals by Philadelphia's Jeff Spano and Toronto's Colin Doyle to begin the second quarter. The Wings took control of the game, tallying two goals by Tom Marechek and one by Tom Ryan to take their first lead of the game, 5-4. Toronto answered with two goals of its own by Doyle and Steve Toll. Philadelphia got one more goal by Guindon before the Rock finished the scoring in the half with a goal by Jim Veltman to take a one-goal lead going into the locker rooms.

Philadelphia opened the second half with goals by Tony Henderson and Bryan Barrett. The Wings didn't allow a shot on goal for the opening five minutes of the third quarter. The Rock finally scored on its first shot in the half by Wilson. Ryan and Toll both scored their second goals of the game to finish the scoring in the quarter. The score was tied at nine going into the last quarter.

Toronto scored four goals in the final quarter and shut down Philadelphia's offense to earn the victory. Toll, Doyle and Wilson each completed hat tricks in the quarter and Darryl Gibson added a goal.
