Toronto Rock News Release

A rowdy, near-sellout crowd of 17, 550 were on-hand at the Air Canada Centre to see the hometown Toronto Rock take on their old rivals, the Philadelphia Wings. The Rock, looking to redeem themselves after two consecutive slow starts, opened with a Colin Doyle goal after only 14 seconds. The Rock quickly built up a 3-0 lead thanks to goals by Painter and Driscoll.

The teams rallied back and forth, and the Rock saw their lead shrink to two goals at the end of the half, up 7-5.

The Wings started the second half as quick as the Rock started the first, with a goal at the 1:31 mark. The Wings were responsible for all the scoring in the third quarter, adding goals at 9:49 and 11:18.

The turning point in the game appeared to be a Rock power play early in the fourth quarter that saw the Rock with numerous glorious scoring opportunities, but coming away with no goals.

The Rock didn't score in the second half until the 12:03 mark of the fourth quarter, and unfortunately at that point, the game was out of reach. The Rock and their fans thought they tied the game with a goal that was ultimately disallowed as a result of a crease violation. The Wings' Jeff Ratcliffe would put the game away for good with a goal at 11:49 of the final quarter. The disallowed goal appeared to take the wind out of the home team, and the final dagger into the Rock was Ratcliffe's second goal of the quarter at 13:35. The Wings prevailed with a final score of 10-8.

The Toronto Rock's player of the game was Colin Doyle with two goals and two assists in the loss. Looking to redeem themselves next Friday the Thirteenth, the Rock will take on the Buffalo Bandits (February 13, 2004 at the ACC).
