Wings Drop Final Home Game to K-Hawks 10-6
April 10, 2011 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
The Philadelphia Wings (5-10) were defeated by the Rochester Knighthawks (8-6) by a final score of 10-6 in their final home game of the 2011 season. Though the Wings got out to a great start defensively, holding Rochester to zero goals in the first quarter, the Knighthawks would answer back with five unanswered goals in the second, taking a 5-2 lead into the locker room at the half. Typical of their performances as of late, the Wings would rally in the second, scoring four straight. Still, Philadelphia, a club playing its second game in just 19 hours, would be unable to surmount Rochester's lead.
Starting the scoring and keeping the Wings in the game throughout, forward Drew Westervelt recorded his third hat trick in three games. His first period goal-a flat-footed jump from behind the net-just managed to squeeze between the crossbar and K-Hawk goalie Matt Vinc to bring the crowd to its feet.
Though the Wings would register an impressive 52 shots on goal, Vinc stayed strong in his crease, recording 46 saves and carrying his team to victory. For Philadelphia, Kurtis Wagar made his first start as a member of the Wings; he would turn 34 of 43 shots faced, and successfully manage to stymie Rochester in the first quarter with a number of unorthodox and exciting saves.
With the Wings refusing to go quietly in their final game from Wells Fargo Center this season, the game was highly physical, causing a shortage of space in the penalty. Following a quick string of penalties and exciting fight between Alex Turner and Pat McCready, the Wings were awarded a penalty shot after Rochester took its fourth penalty in under two minutes, one infraction over the legal limit for those who can be held in the penalty box. Even after the final whistle, both teams would congregate at midfield to continue the game-long talking and pushing.
The Wings have just one game left in their 2011 season. They will take on the Minnesota Swarm from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul next Saturday, April 16. Faceoff is set for 8:30p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the NLL Network and www.NLL.com.
