Wings Announce Retirement of Defensive Veteran Paul Cantabene
February 27, 2004 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
The Philadelphia Wings indoor lacrosse team announced the retirement of veteran Paul Cantabene due to work commitments. The eleven-year National Lacrosse League defenseman is in his second season as an assistant coach for the men's lacrosse team at the University of Maryland.
"The announcement of Paul's retirement comes as a tough blow to this team at this point in the season, " said Wings General Manager Marty O'Neill. "Paul was having a banner season and we will miss his presence on and off the turf. We all wish Paul the best of luck with his coaching career."
"It's been great to play for a franchise like the Wings," said Cantabene. "The players, staff and owners have treated me with the utmost respect and I wish them all the best. The decision to retire has been a very difficult one."
Cantabene recorded 26 points (19G, 27A) since being acquired by the Wings in a trade with the Colorado Mammoth on September 27, 2002. After breaking into the league in 1994 with the Baltimore Thunder, Cantabene saw stints with three other teams including the Pittsburgh CrosseFire, Washington Power and Philadelphia. He was a member of three NLL's All-Star Teams, most recently the Eastern Division squad that played in Denver, CO last Sunday, February 22.
With the retirement of Cantabene, the Wings moved defenseman Keevin Galbraith from their practice squad to their active roster. The Paoli, PA native will see playing time tonight against the Toronto Rock at the Air Canada Centre.
The Wings return to the Wachovia Center tomorrow night to face the Toronto Rock at 8 p.m. The first 5,000 fans will receive Tom Marechek bobblehead dolls, courtesy of Cooper University Hospital. The Wings will play three additional home games at the Wachovia Center this season, including Saturday March 13 vs. the Rock; Saturday, March 20 vs. the Anaheim Storm; and Saturday, March 27 vs. the Rochester Knighthawks.
Single game tickets for Wings indoor lacrosse are $18, $23, and $27 in advance ($20, $25, and $29 on game day) and on-sale now at the Wachovia Center Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Get your boarding passes now and take flight with Wings. Partial season tickets for the remaining 2004 home games are on-sale now by calling 215-389-WING (9464).
