Wings acquire goaltender Roik from San Jose

August 18, 2005 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release

The Philadelphia Wings acquired fifth-year goaltender Matt Roik from the San Jose Stealth in exchange for the sixth pick in the 2005 National Lacrosse League Entry draft. Roik joins sixteen-year All Pro goaltender Dallas Eliuk between the pipes for the 2006 season and replaces Nick Schroeder, who was picked up by the Portland LumberJax in the NLL expansion draft last month.

"Roik is a proven number one goaltender," said Wings General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson. "Our team is much stronger defensively with Dallas and Matt as our goaltending tandem. He's also a great competitor and will make our team overall much better." Roik was selected in the first round (third overall) by San Jose in the Anaheim dispersal draft. Playing in 16 games last season, Roik compiled a 4-8 record with a 12.94 goals-against average and a 72.47 save percentage. Over his four-year career with New Jersey and Anaheim, he has accumulated 1,190 saves and a 73.41 save percentage.

The six-foot-five, 215-pound Dunnvegas, Ontario native has spent his summer playing for the St. Catherine's Major Athletics in the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Over the summer, he has posted a 9.38 goals against average in nine games. Roik was seen on ESPN SportCenter's "Top Ten Plays" this season for scoring a goal.
