Wings 2003 Season Takes off This Friday

The Wings open their 2003 season this Friday, January 3 at General Motors Place in Vancouver. This will be the second ever meeting between the Ravens and the Wings. The Wings defeated the Ravens in Vancouver on December 9, 2002 by a score of 18-14. This will also be the Ravens first game of the 2003 season.

The Wings home opener will be at the First Union Center on Saturday, January 11 at 8 p.m. vs. the New York Saints. The first 10,000 fans to the game will receive a Wings schedule magnet, courtesy of Buick. This will be the first time that Wings fans will get to see newcomer Paul Cantabene, who was acquired in a trade with Colorado in September. Cantabene, a defender, is a ten-year veteran of the National Lacrosse League.

ROSTER UPDATE

The Wings roster has seen many changes since the end of the 2002 season. In addition to Cantabene, defender Andrew Guindon was acquired from the Ottawa Rebel. Also new to the Wings is defender Drew Carey who was acquired in a trade with the Toronto Rock for Wings forward Kevin Finneran. The Wings will also miss the offensive production of forward Jake Bergey, who underwent surgery for a torn ACL on December 11. Bergey will sit-out for the duration of the 2003 season.

MEDIA LUNCH

The Wings will host their annual media lunch at the Lexus Club in the First Union Center on Tuesday, January 7 at noon. In attendance will be head coach Adam Mueller, defenseman Jeff Spano, Tom Slate, and Jake Bergey.

CAPTAINS NAMED

Captains were named for the 2003 Wings season on December 21. Veteran and all-time leading point scorer Tom Marachek will wear the captains "C" this season. Serving as alternates will be forward Jeff Ratcliffe and defender Tom Ryan.

SEASON TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE

Individual tickets are $27, $23, and $18. College students and all kids under 14 are always $10. This Friday night's game in Vancouver will be shown tape-delay on Comcast SportsNet at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 4.

PLAYER PROFILE - PAUL CANTABENE

This week's player profile is ninth-year player Paul Cantabene. Cantabene has recorded 240 points (86G, 154A) in his ten-year NLL career. He played with the Baltimore Thunder, Pittsburgh Crossefire, and Washington Power prior to being traded to the Wings this past September.

Cantabene is an assistant lacrosse coach for the University of Maryland men's team. He resides in Baltimore with his wife, Tracey.
