Wingnuts Wingnuts Acquire Rookie Righty from Lincoln

April 21, 2017 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts added another piece to their 2017 pitching staff Friday, trading for and signing right-hander Josh Goossen-Brown.

In exchange for Goossen-Brown, Wichita traded catcher Brent Dean to the Lincoln Saltdogs. A Wingnut for each of the last three years, Dean hit .275 with seven home runs, 63 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 155 games in a Wichita uniform between 2014-16.

Goossen-Brown began his collegiate career in 2010 with a season at Los Angeles Valley College before transferring to Cal State Northridge for two years. As a two-way player for the Matadors, the Los Angeles native drove in 56 career runs and left the program tied for most saves all-time with 14. The righty continued his success as a senior at San Diego, posting a 1.55 ERA and seven saves over 18 relief appearances, in addition to hitting .314 with four home runs. That performance prompted the Chicago White Sox to make Goosen-Brown their 31st round selection in the 2014 MLB Draft, and assign him to their Rookie-level affiliate in Arizona.

In his first professional season, Goosen-Brown continued to post strong numbers at the back end of the bullpen, striking out 28 in 21.1 innings and nailing down three saves for the Arizona League White Sox. Goosen-Brown's 2015 campaign was lost due to Tommy John surgery, and the 26-year old made just six more appearances in rookie ball in 2016 before being released. He was signed by Lincoln in January of this offseason.

Goossen-Brown is the 22nd player to sign with the Wingnuts for the upcoming season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which opens on May 6.
