Wingnuts Sign Rookie Righty Martinez
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts announced another addition to their pitching staff on Monday, signing rookie right-hander Fernando Martinez.
Martinez will be making his professional debut in 2018 after wrapping up a collegiate career that featured stops at three colleges competing at three different levels. The Houston, Texas, native made his collegiate debut in 2014 with Wharton County Junior College, going 0-1 with a 4.17 ERA in 11 appearances. The following season, Martinez took on a critical role at the back of the Pioneers bullpen, making 16 relief appearances and posting a 3.24 ERA. The righty went 6-4 over 58.0 innings, striking out 45 with just 12 walks, while picking up a pair of saves.
Martinez transferred to Lamar University in 2016, where he split time as a starter and reliever. Over the course of 17 outings, including five starts, Martinez registered a 2-3 record with a strong 2.74 ERA. The 24-year old allowed only 35 hits in 46 innings of work, logging a trio of saves for the Cardinals.
For his final collegiate season, Martinez transferred to NAIA LSU-Alexandria, where he moved back into the starting rotation. Over 13 starts and 18 total appearances, Martinez led the team in wins (8), innings pitched (80.0), and complete games (4). The righty struck out 70 while issuing only 24 walks.
The signing of Martinez brings the number of Wingnuts players under contract for the 2018 season up to 16. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which opens on May 6.
The 11th season of Wingnuts baseball and the club's pursuit of an eighth consecutive division title kicks off with a three-game home series against the Kansas City T-Bones, beginning on Friday, May 18.
