WICHITA, Kans. (May 16, 2017) - The Wichita Wingnuts got two home runs from Matt Chavez and used six scoreless innings from the bullpen to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-6 in their final regular season tune-up at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Goldeyes got the scoring started early, as David Bergin connected on a solo home run off Wingnuts starter Jordan Cooper in the top of the first. Shawn Pleffner tacked on a two-out RBI double, giving Winnipeg a 2-0 advantage.

Wichita (2-0-1) answered with authority in the bottom half, as Chavez blasted a three-run home run to provide the Wingnuts with a 3-2 lead.

The offensive fireworks continued in the second inning, as Alixon Suarez hit a solo blast and Josh Romanski added an RBI double to put the Goldeyes in front 4-3. Harrison Kain then evened the score at 4-4 with a single into right, plating Leo Vargas, who was hit by a pitch and stole second.

Andrew Sohn lined a two-run homer in the top of the third, but Cooper induced an inning-ending double play to keep the deficit at 6-4. TJ Mittelstaedt launched an opposite-field solo shot off Goldeyes starter Edwin Carl to trim the lead to 6-5.

Wingnuts relievers Ryan Kussmaul and Eddie Medina restored some order to the proceedings with a trio of scoreless frames, but Winnipeg's Kenny Matthews and Joel Effertz countered with three zeroes of their own to maintain the lead heading to the seventh.

Catcher Zac Fisher gunned down Casio Grider stealing to help Austin Boyle work around a leadoff walk in the seventh, and Kain evened the score at 6-6 in the bottom half with a ringing double that scored Vargas.

In the eighth, Chavez crushed his second homer of the night, a massive two-run blast to left-center that put the Wingnuts in front 8-6. Jared Wilson locked down the victory with a scoreless ninth, retiring Josh Romanski on a groundout to secure the save.
