Wingnuts Game Recap: Three-Run First Dooms Wingnuts in St. Paul
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The St. Paul Saints scored three in the bottom of the first, and that was all they needed as they knocked off the Wichita Wingnuts 3-1 Wednesday night at CHS Field.
Tim Colwell started the bottom of the first inning with an infield single for the Saints (46-43), and one-out later, Brady Shoemaker hit an opposite field homer to make it 2-0. St. Paul then got a third run when Mitch Delfino dumped a two-out single into left-center which scored Dan Johnson.
Tim Brown (3-4) bounced back after the rough first inning, retiring St. Paul in order in the second and third frames. The veteran righty retired 15 of the next 16 after the Delfino run-scoring single, with the only base runner a Tony Thomas infield single in the fourth, which was promptly erased by a double play. The only other threat for the Saints came in the seventh, when they loaded the bases with two down, but Brown got out of the frame unscathed. Seth Harvey followed Brown, and retired St. Paul in order in the eighth.
The Wingnuts (53-35) picked up their lone run of the night in the sixth. Martin Medina led off with a double, and Brent Clevlen then followed with a two-bagger of his own to get Wichita on the board.
The sixth inning tally was all Wichita could muster against Mark Hamburger (13-6), who picked up his seventh complete game and 13th win of the season, both league-highs. The veteran righty allowed six hits, and outside of the two doubles, only allowed one other runner to get past first base.
The Wingnuts and Saints wrap up their four-game set Thursday night at CHS Field. Wichita will send righty Alex Boshers (10-3, 3.73) to the mound, while St. Paul will counter with fellow right-hander Ryan Zimmerman (6-6, 4.89). First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM/93.9FM KGSO, TuneIn, and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
The Wingnuts return home to play the final 10 games of their regular season at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, beginning on Friday, August 25 against the Texas AirHogs.
