Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - A pair of three-run innings from the offense and five shutout innings from Danny Gutierrez helped the Wichita Wingnuts cruise to a 7-1 victory over the Cleburne Railroaders on Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Wichita (57-38) failed to muster a baserunner through the first two innings against Cleburne starter Alberto Rodriguez (5-7), going six up, six down on just 18 pitches. That all changed in the third, as the Wingnuts grabbed three runs with help from three Cleburne (44-52) errors.
Richard Prigatano started the inning with a single, then Brennen Salgado sent a twisting fly ball down the left field line that landed fair and kicked toward the Wingnuts bullpen. Prigatano scored all the way from first, and Salgado rounded the bases when left fielder Geraldo Valentin's throw sailed to the backstop. Christian Stringer made it 3-0 when he looped a single that rightfielder Axel Johnson couldn't field cleanly, then overthrew home to allow Leo Vargas to score.
Salgado kickstarted another rally in the fifth, drawing a leadoff walk and racing around to score on Stringer's RBI single for a 4-0 Wichita lead.
Gutierrez (1-1) had to battle his way through the early frames, allowing multiple baserunners in each of the first three innings. The right-hander settled down afterwards, allowing just a one-out single over his final two innings to pick up his first victory with the Wingnuts.
Wichita blew the game open with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Brent Clevlen rifled an RBI single and TJ Mittelstaedt drove home two more with a bloop knock into right for a 7-0 advantage.
Cleburne got on the board with two outs in the ninth courtesy of an RBI single from Maikol Gonzalez, but Austin Boyle induced a pop up on the next pitch to wrap it up.
The Wingnuts conclude the regular season with a four-game home series against the Salina Stockade beginning Friday at 7:05. Jordan Cooper (7-2, 3.83) gets the start for Wichita, while Salina has not yet announced a start. All the action will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM, and at americanassociationbaseball.tv.
