Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WINGNUTS SWEEP LEMURS

The Wichita Wingnuts finished off a sweep of the Laredo Lemurs Wednesday night, claiming a 9-8 victory at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. With Wichita leading by a run in the eighth, Laredo leveled the score with a run. The Wingnuts took the lead right back in the bottom half, as Zack Cox led off the inning with a solo homer to put the home team back in front. Frankie Reed then came on for the ninth to close it out and seal the Wingnuts sixth straight win, which ties their season-high. The two clubs traded runs early on, with a Brent Clevlen solo homer and RBI double by Harrison Kain giving Wichita the lead in the first two innings, only to see the Lemurs even the score with two in the third. T.J. Mittelstaedt put the Wingnuts back in front in the home half, but Laredo then took their first lead of the series with a four-run fourth. Christian Stringer got one back for Wichita in the bottom of the inning, and the Wingnuts then regained the lead in the fifth on a two-run double from Kain and an RBI single by Leo Vargas. The win gave the Wingnuts a season-high three-game lead in the division.

POWER SURGE

The Wingnuts have seen a spike in their home run totals over their last five games, homering 13 times to bring their season total up to 40. Wichita added two more last night, with Brent Clevlen and Zack Cox each launching solo shots. Clevlen has led this power surge for the Wingnuts, homering five times in his last five games to bring his team-leading total to 13, which also is also the second-highest total in the league. Cox's homer was his fourth of the season, and second in his last four games. The former Arkansas Razorback's bomb also provided Wichita with their margin of victory last night, and gave the Wingnuts their seventh last at-bat win of 2016.

UP NEXT: GARY

Riding a six-game winning streak, the Wingnuts head north to Gary, Indiana tonight to begin a four-game series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats at U.S. Steel Yard. The RailCats are the last team to take a series from Wichita, as they took two of three back at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium from June 3-5. Both teams enter this weekend set leading their respective divisions.
