Florida Tropics SC News Release
MESQUITE, Texas - The Florida Tropics will go into their showdown with the San Diego Sockers next weekend riding a seven-game winning streak following a 5-3 road win over Mesquite Saturday night.
The Tropics are now 12-1 and in first place in the Major Arena Soccer League's Eastern Conference. They will host the Sockers, one of the two other teams in the league with just one loss heading into this weekend, at the RP Funding Center in a 5:05 p.m. kickoff.
Gordy Gurson and Antonio Manfut scored 10 seconds apart just short of five minutes into the first quarter to give Florida a 2-0 lead in Mesquite.
Lucio Gonzaga was credited with Florida's third score, an own goal deflected off a Mesquite defender, before Zach Reget got a big momentum changer, taking a long outlet ball from Hugo Silva to make it 4-1 just three seconds before the break. For Silva, it was his fourth assist of the season already.
Mesquite pulled to within 4-2 with just under two minutes to play, but Drew Ruggles scored a sixth-attacker goal from his own defensive third before the Outlaws added a final tally with just 11 seconds to play. Mesquite outshot the Tropics, 28-23.
Florida will host San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.
