Win or Lose, the Game was Worth Every Cent

JOLIET, IL – The Sioux City Explorers (9-7, 31-30) defeated the Joliet JackHammers (4-11, 32-27) 4-to-2 on Monday night at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers are 2-and-2 through 4 games of this 10-game home stand. They are also 2-and-6 through eight games of this 10-game season series with the Explorers. The attendance was 3,742 on a night when fans were able to pay what they felt the game was worth. For every nine dollars fans spent, two dollars was donated to the Joliet Alliance for Youth.

The JackHammers scored a pair in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Chad Henry's (2-for-3) first triple of the season (11th RBI) scored Jeff Allen (2-for-4) who led off the inning with a single. Henry would later score on Cris Colon's error at third base on a Tony Chance (0-for-4) grounder.

The Explorers scored three runs in the top of the 7th inning. Rich Rodrigues (1-for-4) connected for a 2-RBI double to right field, and Dalphie Correa (2-for-3) grounded a RBI single down the left field line. RHP Randy Goodrich (2-3) allowed those runs (all earned), five hits, walked two and struck out four in taking the loss.

RHP Adam Springston (2-1) earned the win pitching six innings. He allowed two runs (one earned), three hits, walked none and struck out two.

In the top of the 9th inning, Curt Lee (1-for-3) led off with a solo home run for a 4-to-2 Explorers lead. Lee has hit three home runs this season and has tallied 21 RBI.

RHP Manny Bermudez worked the 9th inning for his 5th save. Two runners were left on base that inning.

LOOSE GRAVEL: Derek Kopacz had his 13-game hitting streak end as he was 0-for-4 as did Rob Fischer (0-for-3) and Rick Wilkins (0-for-3) with their 7-game hitting streaks.

The JackHammers and Explorers play the second game of this three-game series on Tuesday night at Silver Cross Field. RHP Rickey Lewis, Jr. (3-5, 4.10) will start for the JackHammers, and LHP Ralph McCasland (2-5, 3.91) will start for the Explorers. Dress up!!! It's Halloween at the ballpark. There will be candy passed out, a costume contest, and the JackHammers will be wearing special orange jerseys that will be auctioned off to the fans at game's end.
