Louisiana IceGators News Release

Lafayette, La.--The trend for the Louisiana IceGators so far this season has been for a new face on the team to step up and take control.

Chris Wilson took the reigns of the teams Wednesday night, scoring two goals in the first period to lead the Louisiana IceGators to a 5-2 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings. Wilson also picked up an assist in the third period.

Jake Trask also scored twice during the game--once in the first and once in the third. Goalie Matt Zenzola improved his record to 4-0, stopping 28 of 30 Mississippi shots.

The IceGators return to action Friday night when they travel to Biloxi to take on the Mississippi Surge. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

"I thought it was a good solid 60 minute game," said IceGators head coach Kevin Kaminski. "I though we did a lot of good things. We kept a lot outside on the defense. We let Zenzola see the puck. He didn't have to make too many spectacular saves, but he was big tonight. Our entries were good. We got some scoring chances and goals off the entries. We cycled the puck with good puck protection and got some nice goals by using our feet and creating havoc down low."

Kaminski also spoke highly of Wilson's performance.

"He expects that kind of performance out of himself, and we expect it," Kaminski said. "He's got a lot of talent and a natural goal scorer. But he's also a heads-up player. He sees the ice well and reads the puck well. If his line gets hot, they can score bunches."

Wilson opened the scoring at the 6:34 mark of the first frame after taking a backdoor feed from Jason Cohen. Matt Robertson also received credit on the assist. Forty second later, Trask went top shelf off of assists from Shawn McNeil and Adam Stuart.

The RiverKings responded two minutes later when Matt Harrington scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway to make it a 2-1 game. The IceGators regained a two-goal lead 14 minutes into the period on Wilson's second goal. Robertson picked up his second assist of the night on the play.

The IceGators increased their lead to 4-1 nearly 16 minutes into the second period when Jason Cohen picked up his fifth goal of the season. Robertson and Wilson assisted on the play. Todd Hosmer put the RiverKings back within two goals when he scored with 40 seconds left in the frame.

Trask added an insurance goal with 6:31 remaining in the game. Reid McLeod and Kirk Byczynski assisted on the play.

According to Kaminski, the key to success during the team's upcoming road trip is keeping things simple.

"We have to stick to our plan and keep demanding the work ethic and discipline that we've come to expect from ourselves," Kaminski said. "We have to keep demanding to get better. We're in first place, and every team is going to be gunning for us. It's hard to stay at the top, and we have to prove day in and day out that we belong at the top."
