Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads are scheduled to host the Los Angeles Blues at Legion Stadium on Saturday, May 18 for their fourth home match of the regular season. This will be the second meeting between the Hammerheads and Blues this season following their match up on the West Coast at the end of April when the Blues took a 4-0 victory over the Hammerheads.
The Hammerheads (1-5-0) have taken five consecutive losses since their first home match at Legion Stadium which also kicked off their 2013 USL PRO regular season. The Blues (4-4-1) are scheduled to play the Richmond Kickers Friday night before traveling to Wilmington for Saturday night's game.
"We have the ability to turn it around," said Head Coach David Irving about the Hammerheads' current ranking in USL PRO. "I do not think we've played as bad as our record indicates. Most of the teams in the league are two or three games ahead of us and have had the opportunity to earn more points. We just need to finish on goal and put more balls in the back of the net."
Wilmington is coming off of a doubleheader weekend; home and away. The Hammerheads took a 1-0 loss on their home pitch Friday night that gave Rochester their first win of the season in the final 10 minutes of the match. The Hammerheads then traveled to Charleston on Saturday where they suffered a 4-2 defeat against the Battery.
Hammerheads defender Gareth Evans was issued a red card during Saturday night's match in Charleston and has received a one-game suspension that will deem him ineligible to play versus the LA Blues over the weekend. Meanwhile, midfielder Shawn Nicklaw is back in action and eligible for play this Saturday after being placed on a three-game suspension for receiving a red card in Phoenix.
Following Saturday night's match versus the Blues, the Hammerheads will travel to Austin, Texas for the second round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The team is scheduled to play the Austin Aztex of the Premier Development League (PDL) on Tuesday, May 21 at House Park. The Aztex took a 3-0 victory over NTX Rayados (USASA) in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup to advance to the next round and host the Wilmington Hammerheads.
