BEAVERCREEK, Ohio - The Dayton Dutch Lions got off to a strong start in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as they took a 3-0 victory against the PDL's River City Rovers on Tuesday night at Beavercreek Stadium. Goals by Irakli Khutsidze, Eric Kissinger and Tjeerd Westdijk lifted the Dutch Lions into a second-round contest with Dearborn Stars SC.

Dayton opened well, and took the lead the eighth minute. After pressing forward on the right side, a cross came to Khutsidze just inside the penalty area, and he was able to volley home into the left corner of the net.

The Dutch Lions, who reached the quarterfinals of the Open Cup a season ago, added to their lead in the 27th minute as Kissinger picked up possession at the top of the penalty area and fired into the left corner. Dayton wrapped up the victory early in the second half, with Westdijk scoring his first goal for the club from the left side of the penalty area after a quick counter-attack with Charles Hertsenberg.

TAMPA BAY 1 (5), ORLANDO U23 1 (3) - VSI Tampa Bay FC took a 5-3 victory in a penalty shootout after giving up a late equalizer to the PDL's Orlando City U23 at the Sanford Soccer Complex. Andriy Budnyy gave Tampa Bay the lead in the eighth minute, putting away a cross by Alex Freitas, but VSI was unable to take advantage of some of its other chances, and Orlando found an equalizer in the 90th minute through Nicolas Russo.

Neither side was able to find a winner in extra time, sending the game to a penalty shootout. VSI was perfect from the spot, with J.T. Noone and Mauricio Salles scoring in the fourth and fifth rounds to close out the victory after Orlando's Nick Sowers had his shot saved by David Martin. Tampa Bay will now host the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Plant City Stadium on Tuesday night in the second round.

PITTSBURGH 1 (5), RWB ADRIA 1 (4): The Pittsburgh Riverhounds advanced to the second round of the Open Cup after defeating RWB Adria from Chicago 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the teams finished even at Highmark Stadium. The amateur side took a surprise lead in the 17th minute as Carlos Munoz intercepted a pass intended for goalkeeper Greg Blum and scored.

Pittsburgh was able to get back on level terms early in the second half as Seth C'deBaca found the back of the net from a corner, and the Riverhounds looked the more likely side to find a winner in the remaining minutes of regular and extra time. In the end, the game came down to a shootout, and when RWB's Johnny Morris hit the crossbar with his side's fourth shot, Matthew Dallman and Kevin Kerr both converted to send the Riverhounds through.

TUCSON 2, PHOENIX 1: Connor Bevans scored twice in the final 10 minutes, including a stoppage-time game-winner, as PDL side FC Tucson upset Phoenix FC at the Kino Sports Complex, ending the Wolves' first appearance in the Open Cup in the first round.

Diego Faria opened the scoring for the Wolves in the 62nd minute as he got on the end of a fine cross by Aaron King, but an error by goalkeeper Sheldon Parkinson, who had Bevan's 82nd-minute free kick elude him and creep over the goal line, allowed Tucson to draw level. The PDL side had a chance to grab a winner with an 88th-minute penalty, only for Saeed Robinson to hit the crossbar, but it was Robinson who played provider in stoppage time, finding Bevans in space for the game-winning goal.
