Huntsville Flight News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Dec. 10 â Brandon Williams hit two free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining to lift the Huntsville Flight to a 71-69 NBDL victory over the Greenville Groove here Tuesday night at the Von Braun Center.
The win propelled the Flight (7-4) into sole possession of first place as they won for the fourth straight time at home this season. The Groove (6-5) had a six-game win streak snapped in the contest.
Williams, who finished with a game-high 24 points, followed a missed three-point shot by Lonnie Harrell in the waning moments and was fouled by Donald Hand as he tried for the game-winning shot.
"It was like a playoff game tonight," Flight head coach Ralph Lewis said. "The two top teams in the league doing battle with one another. It was a two-point game tonight and the last time we played it went into overtime -- we expect this type of game when we play them."
Bakari Hendrix added 14 points for the Flight, while Harrell scored 13 and Eric Chenowith chipped in 12.
Hand led five Groove players in double figures with 18 points. Brandon Kurtz and Billy Thomas each contributed with 12 points for Greenville, while Fred Williams and John Linehan had 10 apiece.
With the game tied at 49 heading into the final quarter, the Flight got a 3-pointer from Harrell and a three-point play from Demetric Shaw to jump out to a six-point advantage at 55-49 with 9:04 remaing. The Groove then outscored the Flight 12-4 over the next four-plus minutes to take a 61-58 advantage.
The Groove kept their lead until 39 seconds left when Harrell hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 69. Greenville did not convert on the other end setting up the game-winning free throws.
"It was two teams fighting for first place tonight," Groove coach Tree Rollins said. "Both teams played well tonight. We just had a few missed dunks and offensive rebounds. We'll bounce back and start another streak."
The Flight return to action Friday when they travel to Asheville for a 7:15 ET contest. Greenville next plays at home Friday against North Charleston in a 7 pm ET start.
