Will Spartans experience aid on opening day?

Augusta Colts News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Experience may be the x-factor for the Augusta Spartans in their 2007 season opener Sunday afternoon against the Daytona Beach Thunder.

While the Thunder returns just four players from its 2006 team, Bubba Diggs has most of his nucleus returning, including Marvin Stone and Anthony Young at wide receiver and Voncellies Allen and John Cratic on the lines.

"Veterans know what to expect," said Augusta coach Bubba Diggs. "They keep their composure, which is huge in an early season game."

Augusta will be inexperienced at quarterback, though. Brandon Satcher, a rookie from Hawaii, is expected to start after battling Jamie Williamson for the position.

"I'm trying to see who comes to the forefront," Diggs said. "Brandon's executing his reads a lot quicker."

Helping his QB situation will be the play of former Clemson Tiger and Buffalo Bill TJ Watkins on the offensive line.

"TJ's valuable because he's seen the game at a larger scale," Diggs said. "Pass protection is pass protection at any level."

This is the first game for the Spartans in the new World Indoor Football League, but Augusta still is trying to erase some holdovers from its inaugural season in another indoor football league: A six-game road losing streak and being swept by the Thunder last year.

"We had two touchdowns called back here and it's time to get out of Daytona Beach with a victory," Diggs said. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. Live updates and webcasts will be available on www.augustaspartansfootball.com and www.wifl.us
