Wildcats Hammer Xplorers 55-33

FAYTTEVILLE, NC - The Cape Fear Wildcats hammered the Memphis Xplorers 55-33 at the Crown Coliseum in North Carolina. With the win the Wildcats captured their second straight American Atlantic division title. Despite the loss, Memphis went 5-5 over their last 10 games to recover from a 1-5 start and finish a franchise best 6-10. For 2004 Xplorers season tickets call (662) 280-3737.

FIRST HALF

The Xplorers took the early lead as they took the opening kickoff and marched down the field. On the tenth play of the opening drive WR/LB George Williams crashed over from the two yard line for a 7-0 lead. The Wildcats responded as FB/LB Wilmont Perry powered in from the one yard line for his af2 record 27th running TD of the season to tie the game. The Wildcats then took the lead as QB Brian Snyder found a leaping OS Anthony Hines in the back corner of the end zone to make it 14-7 early in the second quarter. Memphis tied it when Williams made a sliding catch in the end zone of a seven yard pass by QB Rod Robinson to tie the game. Cape Fear grabbed the lead again as Snyder and Hines hooked up again, this time from 24 yards, to give the Wildcats a 21-14 advantage. Xplorers kicker Steven Green closed the first half scoring with a 37 yard field goal. At halftime Cape Fear had a 21-17 lead.

SECOND HALF

OS Jamie Deese returned the second half kickoff 58 yards for a TD for Cape Fear and for the Xplorers it only got worse. The Xplorers turned the ball over on their first four possessions of the second half and the Wildcats ran away with the game. WR/DB Mitch Galloway scored on a one yard run, WR/DB Marcus Whitehead returned an interception 13 yards for a TD, Galloway scored again from one yard out to make it 48-17 Cape Fear. WR/DB Johnny Loper helped the Xplorers stop the bleeding with a 16 yard TD catch. The Wildcats came back as Perry blasted in from five yards out to make it 55-25. Xplorers WR/LB Joe Gunn capped the scoring with a 6 yard TD catch. FINAL SCORE Cape Fear 55, Memphis 33.
