Moncton Wildcats News Release
The Moncton Wildcats erased a two goal third period deficit to defeat the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 5-4 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at Center 200 in Sydney Nova Scotia. Alex Saulnier with a pair, Allain Saulnier and Devon MacAusland scored for the Cats. Jean Kristoff Grenier, Pierre-Antoine Dion, Viktor Hertzberg and Corey MacIntosh scored for the Screaming Eagles. Steve Gleeson stopped 20 of 24 shots he faced and now has a 3-0 record since joining the Cats in October. Andrew Hayes had a strong game stopping 38 of 42 shots he faced.
The Wildcats came out flat in the first period and were outshot 15-9 in the frame. Cape Breton took advantage of three breakdowns by the Cats to take a 3-0 lead after one period. Grenier opened the scoring at 15:55 on a shot that beat Gleeson on his glove side. Dion capitalized on a pretty passing play at 18:21 and 10 seconds later Hertzberg made it 3-0 for Cape Breton.
Moncton came out with more jumped in the second and generated quality scoring chances early on. However, they could not beat Hayes until Alex Saulnier blasted a slap shot from the right faceoff dot to cut the Screaming Eagles lead to 3-1.
Moncton dominated the third period carrying a 19-3 edge in shots. In a span of 3:18 early in the frame the Cats found themselves with a 4-3 lead. Alex Saulnier score at 3:24 of the frame, brother Allain tied the game at 3 on the powerplay at 5:48 and MacAusland put the Cats up 4-3 at 6:42. Wildcats look as though they were going to steal a game in Cape Breton until MacIntosh set the stage for overtime when he beat Gleeson at 14:13 to tie the game at four.
Neither team were able to generate much in overtime. In the shootout Gleeson stopped 2 of the 3 Screaming Eagles shooters and Daniel Petterrson and Allain Saulnier scored to win the game for the Wildcats snapping their mini two game losing streak.
Wildcats will now use this week to prep for a three games in three day road trip through Quebec next weekend. The Cats are in Victoriaville Friday night, Drummondville on Saturday and Gatineau on Sunday.
Remember to tune into Sportsnet tomorrow night at 7pm as two Wildcats Alex Saulnier and Brandon Gormley suit up for the QMJHL team as they face the Russians in Game one of the 2010 Subway Super Series.
