Wild Walk-Off Win Opens Second Half
LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks began play after the All-Star break with a walk-off win, 7-6, over Rancho Cucamonga Thursday night at The Hangar. Lancaster scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on two hits, three walks and four wild pitches.
Rancho Cucamonga (0-1, 41-28) took a three-run lead into the bottom of the ninth after a Marcus Chiu home run off of Salvador Justo (2-1) in the top of the inning. Connor Strain was set to come in for the Quakes, but was replaced by Max Gamboa before throwing a pitch.
Gamboa (4-2) struggled and could not record an out. He walked in a run and allowed another to score on a wild pitch. Luis Castro tied the game with single to left field, giving him 55 runs batted in on the season. With Sean Bouchard up, another wild pitch brought home Luke Morgan as the winning run.
The win was Lancaster's fifth in walk-off fashion this season. It's the team's second-straight comeback win, after overcoming a six-run deficit in a win over Inland Empire on Sunday.
The Quakes struck first with Donovan Casey's two-run home run in the opening inning. Lancaster (1-0, 35-34) tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Luke Morgan drove in a run with a triple, and Sean Bouchard brought Morgan home with a single. Bouchard finished the night 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Lancaster is 10-5 against the Quakes, who won the First Half title in the South Division. Thursday's game was the first of 20 in a row for the JetHawks against divisional opponents.
The four-game series continues Friday night at The Hangar. Right-hander Will Gaddis (3-5) is set to start for Lancaster. First pitch is 6:35 pm.
