Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, Pa - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, took a 6-4 decision from the Slippery Rock Sliders, who are new to the Frontier League in 2007, Friday night at CONSOL Energy Park in game two of the weekend exhibition series.

Mario Garza led the Wild Things with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish with a homerun, double and two RBI.

Starting pitcher Patrick Sadler pitched four strong innings for the Wild Things, striking out four and not allowing a run.

The Wild Things got on the scoreboard first in the home half of the second inning when designated hitter Mario Garza sent Caleb McConnell's first-pitch offering over the wall in dead centerfield to give the Wild Things a 1-0 advantage.

After avoiding trouble in the top half of the fourth, the Wild Things extended their lead to 4-0. Nathan Messner was responsible for the first two runs of the inning with a two-run homer to left-centerfield to bring in Pat O'Brien. Then with two outs and Kyle Padgett on second, shortstop Rene Quintana hit a RBI double for the third run of the inning after his grounder down the firstbase line took a fortunate hop off of the bag and rolled toward the Wild Thing bullpen down rightfield.

Matt Sutton gave the Wild Things a five-run cushion in the fifth by starting the inning with a leadoff single up the middle. Next, Sutton went on to reach thirdbase by stealing second and then heading to third after a throwing error by Sliders catcher Mike Darrah. After Jarod Rine reached on a base on balls, another throwing error by Darrah on Rine's stolen base attempt allowed Sutton to trot home for a 5-0 lead.

The Sliders got on the board in the sixth with a solo blast by Jason Curry off of relief pitcher J.J. Hollenbeck down the rightfield line.

In the seventh, Curry struck again with the bases loaded against pitcher Shawn Kerek when he ripped a liner to the right-centerfield gap for a triple to clear the bases, making it a 5-4 ballgame.

The Wild Things responded in the seventh with what would be the final run scored on Garza's second RBI of the game by plating Rine with a double. However, Garza was thrown out at third on the relay throw as he attempting to stretch his hit into a triple.

Earlier Friday, the Wild Things picked up a 6-2 win over the Sliders in the first exhibition game of the season for the team. The Wild Things pitching staff held the Sliders to two hits for the game.

The Wild Things will host the Sliders Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park at 7:05 p.m. for the third game of the exhibition series. The Sliders and the Wild Things will open up the regular season May 23 at 7:05 p.m. For tickers, call the box office at 724-250-9555.
