Washington Wild Things News Release

The Washington Wild Things (45-46), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, beat the Freedom 10-6 at Champion Window Field in Florence, Kentucky Friday night.

The game between the two teams, battling to get a playoff spot, was delayed for 42 minutes due to the rain.

The Freedom scored a run in the first inning, but Washington answered in the second inning with two runs. Florence tied the game up in the third, and in the fourth, however, Florence's Billy Mottram blasted a grand slam to put Florence in front by four.

The Wild Things then began chipping away, scoring two runs in the fifth, two in the seventh, and three more in the eighth to give Washington the lead for the first time since the third inning. Washington then went on to add an insurance run in the ninth.

Nathan Messner went three for five and chalked up three RBI in the game.

Sam Mann (3-3) got the victory for Washington pitching just one and two-thirds innings. Joe D'Alessandro got his third save of the season.

The victory pulled Washington within three games of Rockford (in the race for the wildcard spot) with five games to go in the regular season.

Washington and Florence meet for game two of this three game set Saturday when first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Airtime on WJPA 95.3 FM is 5:55 p.m. Washington returns to CONSOL Energy Park Monday to host the Midwest Sliders for the final three games of the 2008 regular season. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Box Office.
