Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, are putting the finishing touches on the 2013 game schedule. Winner's Day returns to CONSOL Energy Park on May 10th as a part of that schedule.

"We've offered 'Winner's Day' nearly every year," said Wayne Herrod of the Wild Things. "It's a great program designed for fourth, fifth and sixth grade students, who are participating in a healthy lifestyles program at school. The most commonly known name for these programs is the DARE program. In essence, the kids explore the advantage for avoiding drugs, tobacco, alcohol, etc."

Teachers incorporate the Wild Things' program into their existing curriculum. The students make posters and banners among other activities. A representative from the Wild Things visits the classes where he speaks about making the right life-style choices. "Players will go to the schools and share their personal experiences with the kids," said Herrod. "They can relate to these kids and share with them that they made the right decisions when they were in fifth grade. As a result, they are professional athletes. It's a great message."

On May 10th, the participating school students are treated to a baseball game at CONSOL Energy Park. This special morning game is played especially for these students. "The kids feel like they are a part of the game," added Herrod. "They will remember the player that visited their school; they get to display their banners, and it's a great reward."

In 2013 the Wild Things will host the Lake Erie Crushers for this exhibition game that is scheduled to be played at 10:30 a.m. For further information contact the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office.

The Wild Things open the 2013 regular season on the road. The home opener is slated for Friday, May 24th.
