SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed free agent goaltender Nolan Schaefer to a multi-year contract.

"Nolan is a young goaltender with a strong record in the minor leagues and some experience in the NHL, and has great potential to become a full-time NHL goaltender," said Assistant General Manager/Hockey Operations Tom Lynn.

Schaefer, 27 (1/15/80), posted a record of 14-16-3 with a 2.64 goals against average (GAA), a .902 save percentage and one shutout in 34 American Hockey Leagues (AHL) games with Worcester, Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006-07. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound netminder was 5-6 with a 2.75 GAA and a .908 save percentage in 11 AHL playoff contests with the Penguins. Schaefer was named the Rbk X-Pulse/AHL Goaltender of the Month for March. He earned an 8-3-0 record with a 1.98 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage and one shutout in 12 appearances in March.

Schaefer appeared in seven NHL contests with San Jose in 2005-06 and posted a 5-1-0 record with a 1.88 GAA, a .920 save percentage and one shutout and became the first Sharks goaltender to begin his career with five consecutive wins. He won his NHL debut at Dallas on Oct. 26 making 12 saves in 31 minutes after replacing Vesa Toskala and backstopped San Jose to a 3-2 victory against Calgary on Oct. 29 in the Sharks first-ever shootout. The Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan-native earned his first NHL shutout with 21 saves at Anaheim Nov. 4 and suffered his first NHL loss against Minnesota Nov. 5.

Schaefer was a standout AHL rookie in 2003-04, posting a 14-9-3 record, a 2.34 GAA and .925 save percentage, along with two shutouts, in 27 games for Cleveland. Schaefer attended Providence College, where he was named to the NCAA East Second All-American team in 2000-01.

Schaefer was originally selected by San Jose in the fifth round (166th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. As per club policy, terms of the contact were not disclosed.
