WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Wenatchee Wild gained a series split against the Alaska Avalanche with a 6-0 win Saturday night before a sellout crowd at the Town Toyota Center. The victory was Wenatchee's seventh in 10 games against division foe Alaska.
The Wild took control of the game in the second period after going 0-for-3 on the power play in a scoreless first period. Defenseman Eric Johnson (Madison, Wis.) scored Wenatchee's first goal of the game, his first goal of the season, less than a minute into the second frame on a shot from the far point. Jeff Jubinville (Edmonton, AB) and Dajon Mingo (Canton, Mich.) picked up the assists.
Wenatchee went into the second intermission with a 3-0 lead on late second-period goals by Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) and Kyle Brodie (Northglenn, Col.). Pauly's tally, scored with less than two minutes remaining in the frame from directly in front of the Alaska net, put an end to his 15-game goalless streak. The first assist went to Christian Hilbrich (Clarendon Hills, Ill.), who fought through an Avalanche defender and slipped a nice backhand pass to Pauly. Nolan Youngmun (Anchorage, Alaska) picked up the second assist. Brodie's 11th goal of the season, which was unassisted, came on a slap shot from the near side blue line with 38 seconds left in the period after he did an excellent job of keeping the puck in the offensive zone on an Alaska clearing attempt.
The Wild scored three more goals in the third period for the eventual 6-0 win. Armand Deswardt (Dallas, Texas) scored two of the Wild's final three goals, the first of which came on the man advantage at 4:48 when he redirected Adam McKenzie's (Petaluma, Calif.) slap shot from the blue line past Alaska netminder Landon Peterson. His second goal, which was unassisted, came with less than three minutes left in the game. It was Deswardt's first 2-goal game of the season. He has six points (3G, 3A) in his last four games. Jubinville scored the Wild's other third-period goal on a redirect from Alex McLean (Duluth, Minn.) on the power play. It was Jubinville's 20th goal of the season. Wenatchee goaltender Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.), who made 20 saves, earned his second shutout and 14th win of the season. Peterson made 25 saves on 31 shots. Wenatchee went 2-for-6 on the power play while Alaska failed to convert on seven power plays.
Wenatchee's next series is at home against the Texas Tornado on Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.
