Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Steve Boggs scored from third on a Bartolome Fortunato wild pitch in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving the Chico Outlaws a series-opening 6-5 victory over the St. George Roadrunners Tuesday night at Nettleton Stadium. The win was the Outlaws second in a row after dropping eight of their previous ten games.

Chico opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning when Julian Benavidez delivered a two-out single to knock in Boggs, but St. George tied the game in the 2nd when Juan Melo scored from third on a throwing error by Outlaws catcher Matt Ceriani. In the 3rd the Roadrunners took the lead on Cody Nowlin's RBI single to plate Ryan Stevenson...and in the 4th St. George went up 3-1 when Dustin Hicks connected off Chico starting pitcher Greg Bicknell for a solo homer to right. The Outlaws knotted up the score in the bottom of the 4th when, with Tony Torcato aboard, Bryan Silverman lined his first professional homer over the left field wall.

The Roadrunners re-took the lead in the 6th when Hicks scored from third on a bunt single by Liu Rodriguez...but in the bottom of the 6th Ceriani came through with a two-run single to plate Torcato and Silverman and put Chico back in front 5-4. The lead didn't last long, though, as Melo singled with one out in the 7th and scored all the way from first on a wild pickoff throw by Outlaws reliever Jason Roach. After committing the error, Roach settled down and retired the final eight batters he faced, while former Outlaw John Segovia came out of the St. George bullpen and shut out Chico in the 7th and 8th innings, striking out four. Fortunato took over for Segovia in the 9th and promptly walked Boggs to open the inning...Todd Gossage then shot a one-out single through the right side, sending Boggs to third...then with Benavidez at the plate, Fortunato bounced the first pitch to the backstop, and Boggs slid in under the tag with the game-winner and giving the Outlaws the 6-5 victory.

Roach (1-8) allowed just one unearned run in three-and-two-thirds innings of relief to pick up the win, with Fortunato (0-2) taking the loss. The Outlaws racked up 11 hits on the night, with Torcato, Silverman, Ceriani and Gabe Riley chipping in with two safeties apiece...Melo and Hick each has two hits to pace the Roadrunners eight hit attack. Tuesday's win improves Chico's second half record to 11-16 and overall mark to 26-43, while St. George dropped to 14-12 in the second half and 32-38 for the year. Game two of the series is set for Wednesday, with left-hander Trevor Caughey (7-4) going for the Outlaws...the Roadrunners will counter with righty Justin Abbott (4-3). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
