Wenatchee Wild News Release

WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Wenatchee Wild saw their 5-game winning streak snapped Sunday in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Fresno Monsters. The Wild still managed to pick up three standings points in the weekend series against the Monsters and took over sole possession of second place in the West Division.

The Wild lit the first light of the game 8:22 into the first period. Ben Carey (Centennial, Colo.) entered the offensive zone down the left wing and beat a defenseman wide. As he closed in on net goalie Tomas Sholl poke checked the puck away, but Trace Redmond (McKinney, Texas) picked it up and scored on a backhander.

Robert Nichols (Dallas, Texas), who was making his seventh straight start, made a pair of tough saves for the Wild late in the first period to secure the lead for his team heading into the first intermission. He stopped Riley Borer's backhand shot on a 2-on-1 before denying a turnaround wrist shot by Mikhail Bushinski from the slot.

Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) put the Wild 2-0 when he scored a power-play goal 8:20 into the second frame. Pauly scored on his own rebound after he received a pass from Max McHugh (Edgewood, Wash.) after he emerged from behind the net. Chris Kerr (Penticton, British Columbia) also assisted.

Fresno got a break and cut Wenatchee's lead in half with 1:38 remaining before the second intermission. A Wild defenseman snapped his stick in half on a shot attempt at the Fresno blue line, which allowed Borer a free rush into the offensive zone where he scored on a wrist shot.

The Monsters tied up the game and forced overtime on another fluky goal when Jeffrey Pauluk scored a long unassisted shorthanded marker with 5:30 remaining in regulation. The Monsters went on to earn the win in a shootout on scores from Kyle Sucher and Ryan Doner.

Nichols stopped 22-of-24 shots while Sholl denied 39 of Wenatchee's 41 shots. Wenatchee went 1-for-6 on its power play chances while Fresno went 0-for-3.

The Wild (29-15-6) will travel to Dawson Creek, British Columbia, this week for a 3-game series against the Rage. The series begins Thursday. Game 2 is Friday and Game 3 is Saturday. All three games of the series are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (PST) and will be broadcast on 560 AM KPQ. For a small fee, all of the Wild's games can also be viewed live online at www.FASTHockey.com.
