The Wichita Wild and Head Coach Ken Matous have finalized the process of hiring assistant coaches for the 2009 season. The Wild coaching staff will be the most experienced staff in the league with over 70 years of coaching experience.
Rick Lee and Troy Black will both return to the staff after coaching the team in 2008. Lee will be entering his third season with the Wild, while this will be Black?s second with the team. New to the staff this year are Morris Lolar and Wendall Davis. Both Lolar and Davis have strong ties to the Wichita area.
Lee started his coaching career in 1987 at Rose Hill High School as an assistant coach. Lee then went on to a five-year run as an assistant at Wichita Collegiate High School. Rick?s first taste of being a Head Coach came in 1993 at Skyline High School. After the 1999 season, Lee took the reins of the Halstead High School football team until 2002. In 10 seasons as a Head Coach, Lee led his teams to five playoff appearances. Lee is currently an assistant for the Andover High School football team where he has been since 2004.
Black played high school football at Fredonia High School where the Yellow Jackets won the Class 4A State Championship in 1983. Black went on to play offensive line at Bethel College where he was a three-year starter for the Threshers.
Black?s coaching career started in 1989 at Bishop Carroll where he coached the freshman team for two seasons. For the next five seasons, Black was an assistant coach at Collegiate High School. In those five seasons, the Spartans were 46-10 including Class 3A State Runner-Up in 1993 and State Champion in 1994. Black then returned to Fredonia where he was an assistant for the 1996 and 1997 seasons before taking the Head Coach position. Troy led the Yellow Jackets to a 27-13 record including Class 3AState Runner-Up in 1998. Black left Fredonia following the 2001 season to be an assistant coach at Valley Center High School, where he was until 2003.
Black is currently a Middle School PE teacher and an assistant football coach at Collegiate High School where he has been since the 2004 season. Troy and his wife Michelle have three children, Ryan and Allison Emmitt (twins, age 12) and Brett (age 3).
Davis starred at North High School in Wichita and was a two-time all-city linebacker. Davis took his talents to Coffeyville Community College where he was named the 3rd best Junior College player in America by Superprep Magazine. Davis wound up heading for the University of Oklahoma where he played in every game his junior season compiling 44 tackles for the Sooners.
Davis was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 6th round of the 1996 NFL Draft. Davis played in 28 games his first two season with the Cowboys. Davis suffered an injury prior to the 1998 season and spent training camp with the Washington Redskins in 1999. Davis re-joined the Cowboys in November of 1999 and saw action in six games. In 2000, Wendall played for the San Francisco Demons of the XFL and in 2001 Davis played for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League before starting his career in Arena Football. Davis played briefly with the Grand Rapids Rampage in 2001 and then joined the San Jose SabreCats where he spent the next four seasons. Davis was a part of the Arena Bowl Championship teams in 2002 and 2004 for the SaberCats. Davis finished his Arena career in Arizona in 2006. He finished with 142.5 tackles in his 5 seasons in the AFL.
Davis is currently in his second season as the Defensive Coordinator of Maize High School after one season as an assistant at North High School. Davis lives in Wichita with his wife, LaTisha, and son, Jackson. Wendall?s daughter, Ashley, is a freshman at Oklahoma City Community College and his son, Jared, resides in Dallas.
Lolar was a three-year starter and two-time All American as a defensive back at Friends University in Wichita. In 1993, Lolar began his professional career with the Canadian Football League?s Edmonton Eskimos. Lolar spent four seasons with the Eskimos and played one with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Lolar has coached collegiately at Bethany College, Friends University, and Texas A&M-Commerce. Lolar is currently an assistant at Wichita East High School. Morris has also coached at Wichita North and Wichita Northwest High School.
