WENATCHEE, Wash. - The WenatcheeWild defeated the Fairbanks Ice Dogs Saturday at the Town Toyota Center, 3-2,to force a split in this weekend's 2-game series. The win also evened theseason series between the West Division rivals, 3-3.
Ben Carey (Centennial, Colo.) opened scoring with 2:39 remaining inthe first period when he scored from the slot during a power play. Defenseman Tyler Rostenkowski (Bloomingdale, Ill.),recently acquired from the Texas Tornado, notched his first point with the Wildin picking up the lone assist.
Wenatchee doubled its lead to 2-0a little over three minutes into the second stanza on a strong individualeffort by Max McHugh (Edgewood,Wash.) around the cage. McHugh took a backhander that was denied by goaltenderSteve Perry, but the rebound came right back to McHugh who lit the lamp withanother backhand stab. Carey assisted.
Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) increased the Wild's lead to 3-0with 6:38 remaining in the second frame when he beat Perry on a penalty shot.Pauly earned the freebie after he was pulled down from behind on a breakawaychance that he generated during a Fairbanks power play. The 19-year-old, whowas recently named to the Top Prospects Tournament, beat Perry with a cookieshelf backhander that repositioned his water bottle.
Fairbanks got back into the gamewhen Sean O'Rourke scored with a minute remaining in the second frame during apower play chance. J.T. Osborn and Gabe Levin assisted.
Osborn cut the Wild lead down toone goal when he scored on a wrist shot from the slot during a man-advantage4:34 into the third period off of a pass from O'Rourke. The Ice Dogs could notget the equalizer down the stretch, however, and Pauly's penalty-shot markerheld as the game-winner.
Greg Lewis (Mars, Pa.) made 21 saves on 23 shots, including a key breakawaystop on Jeff Earnest with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. Perry made28 saves on 31 shots. Wenatchee scored one power-play goal on six tries whileFairbanks notched two man-advantage markers on seven opportunities.
Carey led the Wild with a goaland an assist. Osborn and O'Rourke paced the Ice Dogs with a goal and an assistapiece.
The Wild (23-13-4) will begin a6-game Alaskan road trip with a 2-game series against the Kenai River BrownBears next weekend (Feb. 10-11).
