Wild Acquire Former KU Running Back Jake Sharp

The Wichita Wild of the Indoor Football League (IFL) on Wednesday signed Jake Sharp to a contract for the 2011 season. Sharp played running back at the University of Kansas from 2006-2009. Sharp will see action as running back and wide receiver for the Wild.

Sharp joined the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2010 and was released prior to the season. As a senior at KU, in the fall of 2009, the Salina, KS native played in 10 games and rushed for 429 yards while catching 34 passes for 266 yards. He left KU with the 10th most rushing yards in school history with 2,239. He finished his career with 23 rushing TD's which is 3rd all-time.

In 2008 Sharp rushed for 860 yards in 13 games. He was named an Honorable Mention on the All-Big 12 squad. He became the first running back in KU history to record 100 receiving yards in a game when he accomplished the feat vs. Iowa State. Sharp finished the campaign with 25 catches for 283 yards.

Sharp helped KU to an Orange Bowl appearance in 2007 and a final record of 12-1. Sharp finished 12th in the Big 12 in rushing with 821 yards on 147 carries. Sharp added nine touchdowns during the season. Sharp was named to the Big 12 All-Academic First Team for his performance in the classroom.

Sharp appeared in all 12 games as a freshman in 2006 and carried the ball 21 times for 129 yards. Sharp attended Central High School in Salina and left as one of the most heralded high school players in Kansas history. Sharp was named Gatorade Player of the Year in Kansas as a senior in 2005. Sharp ran for 6,524 yards in high school which is the second most in state history. Sharp was also a three-time state champion in the long jump.

Sharp and the rest of the Wild will open training camp in late February with the opening game of the 2011 season taking place on March 7 in Grand Island, NE where the Wild will take on the Nebraska Danger.
