Wichita Signs Strikeout Specialist Tillman
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts added another power arm to the 2018 pitching staff on Thursday, announcing the signing of righty Daniel Tillman.
Tillman, 29, will be making his first foray into the independent ranks in 2018, having spent his seven previous professional seasons in the minor-league systems of the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Milwaukee Brewers.
Originally a second round selection by the Angels in the 2010 MLB Draft out of Florida Southern College, Tillman quickly made his way through the Los Angeles system. Working almost exclusively as a late-inning reliever, Tillman began his pro career with Rookie-level Orem in 2010, going 2-2 with a 1.95 ERA and ten saves. He struck out 50 batters in 32.1 innings, while surrendering only 23 hits.
The Angels promoted Tillman to Class-A Cedar Rapids in 2011, and the Fort Myers, Florida, native again posted sterling numbers. Over 36 appearances, Tillman posted a 5-3 record and a 2.04 ERA, punching out 70 in 66.1 innings. He earned a late-season promotion to High-A Inland Empire, and the following season reached Double-A Arkansas, the highest point he would climb in the Angels system.
After being released by the Angels in early 2014, Tillman was quickly snapped up by the Dodgers, who assigned him to High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Tillman battled injuries that resulted in a 5.92 ERA that season with the Quakes, but bounced back the following season to log a 2.76 mark over 58.2 innings.
Tillman moved on to the Brewers in 2016, though injuries would limit him to just 19.2 innings with Double-A Biloxi. When healthy, Tillman served up some of the best numbers of his career, allowing just one run over those 19.2 innings. In addition to the sparkling 0.46 ERA, Tillman struck out 25 while only issuing six walks.
The righty did not play during the 2017 season while recovering from injury. In seven professional seasons, Tillman has struck out 360 in 326.1 innings, with 48 saves and a 3.72 ERA.
Tillman's signing brings the number of Wingnuts players under contract for the 2018 season up to 19. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which opens on May 6.
The 11th season of Wingnuts baseball and the club's pursuit of an eighth consecutive division title kicks off with a three-game home series against the Kansas City T-Bones, beginning on Friday, May 18.
