Quad City Mallards News Release

WICHITA, Kan. (January 29, 2012) - Chris Chappell's hat trick propelled the host Wichita Thunder to a 5-1 win over the Quad City Mallards Friday night. With the loss, the fourth place Mallards drop to 23-17-1 (47 points) and remain one point behind the third place Missouri Mavericks in the Turner Conference standings.

Chappell kick-started the Wichita attack by snapping a rebound home to open the scoring at 13:06 of the first period. The gap widened to 2-0 when Matt Summers buried a wrist shot from the slot at 17:36 of the first.

R.G. Flath extended the Thunder lead to 3-0 at 9:05 of the second period. Wichita was shorthanded when Chappell compounded Quad City's woes by scoring his second goal and the Thunder's fourth from the left wing circle with just nine seconds left in the second.

It was the Mallards who were down a man when Chappell tipped in his third of the night to extend the Wichita advantage to 5-0 at 11:12 of the third period. At 15:55 of the third, the Mallards' Taylor Vichoreck redirected a power play goal home from doorstep to halt Wichita goaltender Bryan Hogan's shutout bid. Vichorek's goal, however, had no impact on the outcome.

The Mallards return to action on home ice Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets.
