Americans Bounce Back Vs Rio Grande Valley

Allen, Texas -The Allen Americans bounced back from last night's 3-0 loss to Rio Grande Valley, handing the Killer Bees a 4-1 loss Sunday, in front of a crowd of 3,920 fans at the Allen Event Center.

It took only six minutes for the Americans to put a goal on the board, as Jeff Martens netted his sixth goal of the season. Jeff Martens from Mark Nebus and Nick Layton at 6:01 of the opening period put the Americans up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

The second period concluded scoreless, but was not void of good defensive hockey. The Americans rallied together and successfully killed off two penalties. Americans netminder Rejean Beauchemin, despite a couple power plays, breakaways, and rebound catches, kept the Killer Bees could at bay. As for the offensive zone of the ice, the Americans battled the Killer Bees for the puck and drove it into the net, but Rio goalie, John Murray, denied all shots. The Americans added six shots on goal for a total of 13, and Rio added 10 for a total of 18, outshooting the Americans. Allen remained in the lead after 40 minutes of play at 1-0.

The Americans added to their lead at 5:52 into the third, Jim McKenzie netted his 15th goal of the season, with Tyler Ludwig and Bruce Graham grabbing the assists. Rio immediately answered the Americans goal. Bees forward Aaron Lee found himself all alone in front of the Americans net. Lee's wrister to the top shelf cut the lead to 2-1. Justin Bernhardt and Nicolas Rioux had the assists.

Americans coach, Dwight Mullins called a time-out, and regrouped the troops. With less than 10 minutes left in the game, Americans center Bruce Graham netted his 24th of the season, giving the Americans back their two-goal lead. Jim McKenzie and Jason Deitsch earned the assists. Americans won the battle of the puck at Rio's end of the net, and Bruce Graham got his second of the night with a wrist shot from the slot. Jason Deitsch had the only assist on the last goal of the night, bringing the final score to 4-1, in favor of the Americans.

The Americans return to home ice at 7:05 next Friday Feb. 3, to face the Tulsa Oilers.
