Whitecaps Return to Swangard
June 9, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
The Whitecaps return to Swangard this weekend with the men kicking off this week's action on Friday night at 7:00 pm versus their I-5 rivals, the Portland Timbers. The next night, the women welcome Denver, which is also a 7:00 pm kick off.
Friday's match has all the makings of another classic tilt between these longtime rivals. The Caps head into this weekend currently in a tie for fourth place, one point behind the Timbers with two games in-hand. The Timbers, who finished first overall last year, are led by young Mexican striker Byron Alvarez. Alvarez has emerged as the Timber's main scoring threat with three goals and one assist.
Fans are encouraged to come early and join Whitecaps Alumni, including former greats Carl Valentine, Paul Dolan, Ian Bridge, and John Catliff, and members of both Jock MacDonald's and Domenic Mobilio's family for a special pre-game tribute to Jock and Domenic.
The Women, who are currently in first place in the Western Conference, are only two points ahead of Denver. The Cougars are led by young midfielder Kristen Kemp who has established herself as Denver's main scoring threat. Up front, speedy 19-year-old forward Taryn Hemmings is the one to watch.
Tickets for both Friday's and Saturday's matches are available at all Ticketmaster locations or by phone at 604.280.4400.
