Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Tuesday the club has re-signed midfielder Felipe and attacking midfielder/forward Yordy Reyna to contract extensions. Felipe agreed to a new contract through 2020 with an option for 2021 and Reyna agreed to a new contract, with the use of Targeted Allocation Money, through 2019 with options for 2020 and 2021.

"Felipe is a player who suits what we want to do," said Whitecaps FC head coach Marc Dos Santos. "He has the characteristics and qualities that we look for in his position. We're looking forward to getting the best out of Felipe."

In his first year with Whitecaps FC, Felipe recorded one goal and seven assists in 25 starts and 30 appearances across all competitions. In addition, the 28-year-old native of Engenheiro Beltrão, Brazil led the 'Caps in touches, chances created, total successful passes, and successful passes ending in the final third.

"For me this means a lot, because this club wants me to stay," added Felipe. "Canada has always made my family feel at home, my son was born here, and we hope to be in Vancouver for a long time. I want to help the club make history and do something special. I'm here to win."

Since his arrival in MLS in 2012, Felipe leads the league with 210 regular season games started. In that span, Felipe also ranks in the top five league-wide in touches and passes into the final third, and among the top 10 in total successful passes, and successful passes ending in the final third. Prior to joining the 'Caps, Felipe played three seasons with New York Red Bulls and three seasons with Montreal Impact.

Reyna, a 25-year-old attacking midfielder/forward in the prime of his career, has created the fourth-most big chances (22) in Major League Soccer since making his debut in July 2017.

"Yordy has shown that he has qualities that are important for our club," added Dos Santos. "He's fast, direct, and has the ability to create chances for himself and others while playing different roles in the attack. We believe he can still become even better."

Last season, Reyna finished tied for fourth in MLS with 15 big chances created, two behind leaders Miguel Almiron, Nicolas Lodeiro, and Darwin Quintero, and level with the likes of Sebastian Giovinco and Carlos Vela. Reyna's 11 assists in 2018, which included four match-winning assists, was tied for the team-high and fell just one short of matching the club MLS single-season record set by Pedro Morales in 2014.

Since arriving in Vancouver, Reyna has scored 13 goals and 15 assists in 37 starts and 50 appearances across all competitions. In that span, he tallied six game-winning goals, already tied for third-most in club MLS history.

"I'm very happy at this club and looking forward to another year in Vancouver," added Reyna. "This is an important year, we have new players, new coaches, and I think it is going to be a very good season."

A native of Chiclayo, Peru, the 25-year old has two goals in 22 caps for his national team and has appeared in the last four matches for La Blanquirroja.

Whitecaps FC open their season on March 2 versus Minnesota United FC at BC Place. Visit whitecapsfc.com for ticket information.
