Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO - Owen White retired 16 of 17 batters faced as the Frisco RoughRiders pitched a two-hit shutout Friday night, dispatching the Hooks, 5-0, at Riders Field.
Corpus Christi dropped back-to-back games for the first time since June 15.
The lone man to reach against White was Wilyer Abreu, who did so via a free pass in the fourth. A Rangers top five pitching prospect by MLB.com, the 22-year-old from North Carolina struck out seven, with the Ks coming over the first four frames. White was forced to exit the game with one-out in the sixth due to an apparent foot injury suffered while delivering a pitch.
The Riders broke a scoreless stalemate by recording five consecutive hits to open the fourth. J.P. Martinez powered the three-run frame with a two-run home run to right field.
Adrian Chaidez rebounded by retiring six of the final seven men he faced to complete the five-inning start.
Corpus Christi's two hits came in back-to-back fashion in the seventh. Alex McKenna, who mustered a broken-bat single through the right side, was thrown out trying to score from first on a double into the right-field corner by Cesar Salazar.
Seth Nordlin scattered those two knocks and two walks over 3 2/3 innings for the save.
The Hooks, looking to take a 3-2 lead in the series, send Jaime Melendez to the mound Saturday night. Melendez was named by the Astros as their minor league pitcher of the month for June.
