Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with CAA Manitoba and a number of local participating sponsors, have announced plans to recognize western Manitoba School Patrols during this Saturday's game against the visiting Calgary Hitmen at Westoba Place.
Over five hundred school patrols from Brandon and surrounding area are expected to attend the game, compliments of the Wheat Kings, the Brandon Police Service and five local partners.
Joining CAA Manitoba as participating sponsors of Saturday's game will be Pauls' Hauling, SUBWAY, Maple Leaf, Chemtrade and The Brandon Sun.
As well, the hockey club has announced a partnership with both The Brandon Sun and SUBWAY, aimed at rewarding children who are part of their school's "Safety Patrol Unit." Once each month, patrol members from one Brandon school will enjoy lunch with members of the Wheat Kings.
The first School Patrol Unit of the month is Riverview School and veterans Linden McCorrister and Connor Gutenberg will be on hand this Wednesday, October 17th to serve lunch and sign autographs with over thirty patrols. Both McCorrister and Gutenberg were members of the Wheat Kings 2016 WHL Championship team.
This School Patrol Luncheon program is designed to recognize those children who volunteer their time in rain, snow or shine to help keep the streets safe for other children. It is also designed in a manner to attract new patrollers through the recognition and benefits of being part of their school's Safety Patrol unit. Part of the program will also provide the hockey team, Manitoba Public Insurance and the Brandon Police Service a forum to relate important safety messages to Brandon and area students.
The School Safety Patrol Program has become a successful and respected safety program throughout western Manitoba. Through this program, combined with CIBC "Read to Succeed" and the hockey club's popular Minor Hockey Caravan, the Wheat Kings will again have a very strong presence and influence in local elementary schools.
Speaking of the Minor Hockey Caravan - the first visit of the year is Wednesday night at CFB Shilo. Representing the Wheat Kings will be veterans Chase Hartje and Baron Thompson along with rookies Ethan Kruger and Ty Thorpe.
The Wheat Kings will be on the ice, assisting minor hockey practices, posing for photos and signing autographs. As well, all minor hockey players in Shilo will receive a complimentary ticket to a November home game, courtesy of Hockey Manitoba and McDonalds Restaurants of Brandon.
In other news, the Wheat Kings - who host the Spokane Chiefs on Tuesday night - will kick off the 2-game weekend with a game against the visiting Everett Silvertips on Friday night in a game presented by Super Thrifty Drugs.
Before the game, the Wheat Kings will honour one of the most popular players in franchise history - Jordin Tootoo.
Tootoo played four seasons in Brandon before going on to a successful National Hockey League career that saw him take to the ice with four teams - the Nashville Predators, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks.
Tickets to this weekend's home games are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
