Wheat Kings' Calvert Named BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player Of The Week

CALGARY, AB. - The BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week is forward Matt Calvert of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Calvert picked up nine points, scoring three goals and six assists to go with a +2 rating in four games over the last week, helping the Wheat Kings post a 1-2-1-0 record in that span.

On Tuesday, March 4th, the Wheat Kings began a three game road trip starting at the Civic Centre in Moose Jaw taking on the Warriors. Calvert picked up a goal and one assist as the Warriors defeated the Wheat Kings 5-3. He was also named the games 3rd Star.

The next evening, Wednesday, March 5th, at the Credit Union i-plex in Swift Current, the Wheat Kings took on the Broncos. Calvert netted a shorthanded goal in the 4-3 overtime loss to the Broncos. He was also named the games 2nd Star.

On, Friday, March 7th, the Wheat Kings rolled into Saskatoon to face the Blades at the Credit Union Centre. Calvert scored his second shorthanded goal in as many games and added two assists, which wasn't enough as the Blades downed the Wheat Kings 6-3.

On, Saturday, March 8th, the Wheat Kings were back in the friendly confines of Westman Place hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings. Calvert picked up three assists in the 4-1 victory over the Oil Kings. He was also named the games 3rd Star.

Calvert, an 18 year old from Brandon, Manitoba, is currently in his rookie season with the Wheat Kings. He spent last season with Brandon's Midget ‘AAA' team scoring 28 goals and 83 points; he is eligible for the upcoming 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

The WHL has also nominated Dustin Tokarski of the Spokane Chiefs for the ADT CHL Goaltender of the Week Award.
