Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- Fresh off Tuesday's victory over the Broncos in Swift Current, the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division leading Wheat Kings have announced that applications are now being accepted for the Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship.
The Scholarship is awarded to the Grade 12 student from western Manitoba who plans to continue their education at Brandon University or in a Diploma program at Assiniboine Community College.
In order to qualify for the Scholarship, students must submit an essay outlining their community volunteer participation. Applicants are asked to please attach a transcript of student marks and also a reference letter from their teacher, counselor, volunteer supervisor or employer.
Maggie was a dedicated volunteer in Brandon for numerous community service groups, including the Wheat Kings. Many nights when the wind was howling and the snow was falling, she would be at the Keystone Centre to promote and sell 50/50 tickets, raising money for the Players Education Fund and sharing that delightful smile with our fans.
Thirteen years ago, she was in a fatal bus accident while vacationing in Austria. The following year, t he hockey club established the Maggie Janz Memorial Scholarship as a tribute to her memory. In 1997, the Wheat Kings Foundation was set up and the team continued on with the scholarship.
The Scholarship consists of the hockey team's profits from the 50/50 draw during the Wheat Kings' final regular season game - Friday, March 16th - against the visiting Regina Pats.
Since it's inception, the Scholarship has awarded over $16,000 to students furthering their education. Applications can be dropped off at the Wheat Kings' office at the Keystone Centre or mailed to #2-1175 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7C5.
The deadline for applications is Friday, March 9th 2007.
On the ice, the Wheat Kings scored four powerplay goals Tuesday night en route to a 6-3 victory. Andrew Clark and Mark Derlago scored two goals each while Rob Klinkhammer and Codey Burki added singles. Clark also added two assists for the Wheat Kings, giving him a team high 16 points since Christmas. Brandon's 4-game road trip this week continues Wednesday night in Saskatoon against the Blades. The Wheat Kings enter the game with a record of 30-19-2-7, good for 69 points and a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with the Calgary Hitmen. Tuesday's win also moved Brandon ten points up on Regina in the battle for top spot in the East Division.
Brandon's next home game is Saturday night when they close out a weekend home and home series with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Saturday night is Giant Tiger Player Card Giveaway as well as another Brandon Source for Sports / Subway Family Night. The Family packag e - available only at Brandon Source for Sports - consists of two adult and two youth tickets, 4 6" Sub sandwiches from Subway, four Coca Colas and four programs - for just $40.
