Whalers Trade Steve Whitely to Sarnia

PLYMOUTH, MI - Plymouth Whalers President, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Vellucci announced the trade of 20-year-old defenseman Steve Whitely to the Sarnia Sting in exchange for a conditional tenth round draft choice in the 2009 Ontario Hockey League Draft.

Earlier, the Whalers sent the same tenth round, 2009 draft choice to Sarnia on Sept. 13 in exchange for 18-year-old defenseman Christian Steingraber.

Plymouth acquired Whitely from Belleville last January at the 2007 OHL Final Trading Deadline. Whitely scored a goal with six assists for seven points and 33 penalty minutes and +10 over 25 regular season games last season and then added five assists with 23 PIM's and was +10 in 20 playoff games during the Whalers' championship run last spring.

Whitely's trade leaves Plymouth with five overage players, or players with 1987 birthdays - acting captain Andrew Fournier, forwards Sean O'Connor and Joe McCann and defensemen Wes Cunningham and Zack Shepley. OHL teams can play three overages at one time and the Whalers will eventually decide on three overage players by the 2008 Final OHL Trading Deadline in mid-January.

After opening the 2007-08 season with a 6-4 loss against Erie last Saturday, Plymouth is back in action this weekend, playing in Kitchener on Friday and then hosting Windsor on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Compuware Arena. All Plymouth games are broadcast on the internet on www.plymouthwhalers.com.

Saturday's game against Windsor is a Family Value Pack game - for $44, families receive four tickets, four hotdogs, four Pepsi products and four lineup cards. Additional tickets for the Family Value Pack can be purchased for $11.

The Whalers also offer three, six and ten-game FLEX package plans as well as season tickets running as low as $239 for a 34-game home schedule.
