Welz Homers in Bees 4-2 Loss to Beloit

(Burlington-IA) - The Burlington Bees (6-8) fell behind early, falling to the Beloit Snappers (8-7) 4-2 in the series opener on Thursday night at Community Field.

Justin Higley led off the game with a double to left. After a pair of fly outs, Chris Iriart smacked his fourth home run of the season, a two run shot to left, giving the Snappers a 2-0 lead. Beloit added to their lead in the top of fourth inning when Trace Loehr reached second on an error and later came home to score on a Jose Chavez sacrifice fly, upping the lead to 3-0.

Ranyelmy Alberto opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a double. Brendon Sanger then grounded out to the right side, moving Alberto to third base. The next batter, Juan Moreno grounded out to second base, scoring Alberto, putting the Bees on the board.

The Bees got to within a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Zach Welz blasted his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall, cutting Beloit's lead to 3-2.

Beloit however would add an insurance run in the ninth and the Bees could not get any closer, losing 4-2 in the series opener. Bommer Biegalski (2-0) picked up the win while Ronnie Glenn (0-1) was charged with the loss. Cody Kurz (2) earned save for Beloit. The Bees and Snapper face off for game two of the series on Friday night at 6:30. Cody Rodriguez makes the start for the Bees against Jame Naile for Beloit.
